Hope all our American friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Arriving back in Canada after a recent trip to India, I was overwhelmed with thanksgiving to be back in North America. Not sure how I became one of the few privileged ones to be born here...but definitely grateful! Grateful for a heated home to live in; clean, safe (and HOT) running water; electricity; free, quality public education for my children; a toilet that flushes it all away (and toilet paper!); ample food; internet access; streetlights; freedom of religion; excellent medical services; shoes, coats, blankets; a functioning democratic government; a trustworthy police force – these and a thousand other things that I take for granted until I don’t have them. Joining you this Thanksgiving in being thankful...we are especially thankful for all our HEROES --- |

COMPLETED DORMITORY at our Children’s Home in Namugongo, Uganda
Happy girls in front of their new dormitory – Children’s Welfare Mission, Namugongo
| |
|
160 excited, chattering girls eagerly moved into their brand new dormitory at the Children’s Welfare Mission in Namugongo, Uganda. The new dorm has 20 bedrooms each sleeping 8 girls, and includes toilets, showers and bedrooms for the house mothers. Construction of the dormitories allows us to take more children at risk into care. The dormitory was completed for around $80,000 which works out to just $500 per child!New boys dormitory coming up next! For complete project information, click here
Our goal, beyond the basic love, care and education of each child, is to ensure that they leave the Home capable of being self-sufficient. To this end we have started construction of a Technical School that will teach our resident orphans and students from the surrounding region various trades such as tailoring; carpentry; food and nutrition in combination with catering; building and construction; mechanics; welding and computer. With tuition paid by outside students, it is projected that this school will be self-supporting in two years. If you would like to invest in this project click here

HEROES OF TODAY – Break the Cycle team in Australia
Neck rubs all around after a
hard day of cycling
|
Fifteen amateur cyclists rode 1500km (that’s 932 miles) from Brisbane to Canberra, joined by others cyclists along the way to “Break the Cycle of Poverty”. The trip took fifteen days, raised $30,000 for a community school in Ndola, Zambia, and raised awareness of the Millennium Development Promises that were made in 2000. These promises, referred to as the Millennium Development Goals, are a commitment made by the G8 countries to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, improve maternal health, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce childmortality, ensure environmental sustainability, develop global partnerships for development, and combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases – by the year 2015. Thanks to our HEROES for their incredible sacrifice of time, money and energy and for reminding Australians of the need to keep working towards these goals. |
"Looking ahead to 2015 and beyond, there is no question that we can achieve the overarching goal: we can put an end to poverty. In almost all instances, experience has demonstrated the validity of earlier agreements on the way forward; in other words, we know what to do. But it requires an unswerving, collective, long-term effort." United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

WEALTHY BUSINESSMAN CATCHES ORPHAN FEVER
| Chris Anderson, among the top ten on Australia’s Young Rich List, was interviewed on channel TEN after Be A HERO Australia took him, his wife Virginia and their four children to visit our children’s home in Nyahururu, Kenya. The Andersons had donated funds to complete construction of our elementary school and were on hand for the grand opening. |

Chris came home from Kenya a changed man with a new passion. Our Australian Director, David Crawford, relayed that Chris was so touched by the love and gratitude radiating from our orphans that he was literally speechless for days. Chris is now actively working with our staff in Kenya to develop businesses that will eventually fund our children’s homes there. Watch the interview at: http://ten.com.au/

RESPONSE TO WARS, TERRORIST ATTACKS AND OTHER BAD NEWS

I’m sure you are as saddened as we are to read the daily reports of bad news – the recent attacks in Mumbai; the renewed, escalated fighting in Goma; shoppers trampled to death at Wal-Mart. We don’t have the answer for world peace, but we do have a weapon to fight back with. It’s called LOVE, and we apply it in liberal doses to all our orphans, believing that instead of growing up bitter and full of hatred due to their tragic circumstances they will learn to forgive, and disperse the love that has been sown into them. LOVE that fills their bellies, educates their minds, soothes their fears and provides them with both warm beds and warm hugs. You may not know that rebel forces and terrorist groups such as Al-Qiada actively search for orphans to turn into child soldiers, suicide bombers, and sex slaves - and indoctrinate with their evil ways.
Please help us counteract the bad news by loving children to wholeness and goodness – send a love gift today!
