Current Be A HERO Project: This project is designed to create an orphanage/school campus that is
self-supporting and self-sustaining through micro-enterprise. The goal is to be
able to produce enough food (corn, beans and vegetables and milk) for the
orphanage and then have extra to sell for a profit.
HOTN Agriculture Report:
The Nyahururu Orphanage
This orphanage is located in the outskirts of Nyahururu in the Losogwa area of
the Laikipia District, Kenya. This area is approximately 120 km from Nairobi in
the southwest region of
Kenya.
It has 370 children on 7 acres of land that consists of on-site facilities such
as dormitories, kitchen, dining, and classrooms.
The strategy is to create orphanage/school campuses that are self-supporting and
self-sustaining through micro-enterprise. The goal is to be able to produce
enough food (corn, beans and vegetables and milk) for the orphanage and then
have extra to sell for a profit.
As part of their plan to create a self sufficient property;
one of the main goals is to obtain a plot of land. They wish to purchase more
land to enable them to grow their own crops. There is a prime plot available
which already has a good well on it. This is the number one priority at this
time. The plan is to purchase farmland and develop irrigation on it.
This will create income and food for self sufficiency.
In 2007 they developed 5 acres that are under cultivation
on rented land. On this land they have planted and harvested Maize that feeds
the children.

Maize being harvested on the rented property.
PROPOSED AGRICULTURAL PROJECTS FOR 2008
These projects are divided into three categories:
(a)
Arable farming
(b)
Vegetable gardening
(c)
Zero grazing
ARABLE FARMING
To be able to accomplish what is needed the orphanage will
require 40 acres of land. It is believed each harvest should yield 480 bags of
corn. This will supply enough for their use and excess to be sold for profit.
The Budget would include:
VEGETABLE GARDENING
The goal here is to grow cabbages, kales, carrots,
onions and any other vegetables that are needed to supply the orphanage and also
enough for them to sell the excess and create a profit.
The Budget would include:
|
- 2nd harrowing -Top dressing (C.A.N)

DIARY COWS/ZERO GRAZING
Two cows are currently being cared for and have been
supplying the orphanage with milk.
Running the Dairy Cow Project requires:
“Zero Grazing”
In order to take advantage of a less expensive method of
rising cows and supplying milk a program called “Zero Grazing” has been
developed.
Zero-grazing means keeping animals in a stall, and bringing
fodder to them instead of allowing them to graze outside. It is also sometimes
called "cut-and-carry". It is an intensive system that produces a lot of milk
from a small amount of land.
Zero-grazing is especially useful in areas where land is scarce. It also
reduces damage to crops caused by grazing cattle.
