Dining Hall and Kitchen at Heroes of the Nation
Children’s Home
in Nyahururu, Kenya

The long-awaited dining hall and kitchen has finally been completed.  Our 430 resident children had been eating while sitting outside on the grass, which was fine on nice days but not so pleasant when it was raining, windy or blisteringly hot.  The cooks are also excited, as they have had to do the majority of the cooking on open fires, again a challenge in the rainy season (wet wood doesn’t burn well!).

This is the old kitchen:

Imagine cooking three meals per day for 500 people in this kitchen – no running water, no countertops, no stove...

This is the old eating area:

The new kitchen boasts four institutional-sized cookers, two stoves with ovens, a large sink with running water, and countertops.  The enormous, wood-burning pots are used to cook beans, rice, cabbage and other vegetables, soups and stews.

The new dining hall is truly a multipurpose space – used not only for meals, but for assemblies, indoor play during inclement weather, games, crafts, meetings and performances.
