SMILE AFRICA

Be A HERO has partnered with Smile Africa to assist them in providing libraries to communities in Ghana.

Smile Africa is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to banishing illiteracy from Africa, contributing towards the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goal of achieving full primary schooling for all children by 2015. Smile Africa is working to establish school libraries, computer centres, bookmobiles and leadership programs to advance a culture of literacy and life-long learning in the villages. Their innovative program, the Smile Africa Library System provides a low cost, easily replicated portable library centre for communities.

Chris Ellom, founder of Smile Africa revisited his native Ghana to attend his father’s funeral. He was shocked at the deepening poverty, deprivation, and lack of opportunity for children to learn, especially in rural communities.  The enormous hardships facing children and youth left a permanent mark on him, and he pledged to become a bridge between the land of his birth (Ghana) and the land of his adoption (Canada). Smile Africa has provided libraries in South Africa and Angola, shipping over 40,000 books and 65 computers.
